FTM top surgery, or FTM chest reconstruction, is a gender-affirming surgery that helps trans patients physically transition. FTM top surgery allows the patient to have a more masculine chest. At Dr. Alvina Won Cosmetic Surgery, we offer safe and effective FTM top surgery in Seattle.
What Is FTM Top Surgery?
FTM top surgery is a cosmetic procedure that gives transgender men a more masculine chest area. This involves various surgical techniques that turn a fuller feminine breast area into a flatter masculine chest. FTM top surgery can involve removal of glandular breast tissue, liposuction, removal of excess skin, and resizing/repositioning of the areolae and nipples.
Am I a Good Candidate for FTM Top Surgery?
Patients with gender dysphoria are ideal candidates for FTM top surgery. Transgender men who want to get rid of their feminine chest area and acquire a masculine chest are excellent candidates.
It is important that candidates be generally healthy and have realistic goals. FTM top surgery is perfect for patients with no post-surgery healing issues. Candidates must have recommendations from their specialists prior to visiting us. Candidates must be fully committed to the surgery and willing to follow preparation and recovery instructions closely.
During your consultation with Dr. Won, you will tell her about your concerns and goals. She will look over your medical records and your recommendations from specialists to see if you are fit for a FTM top surgery. Dr. Won will examine your breast area before creating a personalized surgical plan. Each phase of the surgical plan will be thoroughly explained to you.
Dr. Won will discuss the preparation, the actual surgery, the healing process, and the cost of the surgery. She will also show you photos of past results. She will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Once the consultation is complete, the date of your FTM top surgery will be set.
Depending on the surgical plan and type of surgical techniques used, the duration of FTM top surgery can last 2 to 4 hours. The surgery will start by administering general anesthesia.
Incisions will then be created to access the underlying tissues. Many incision options are available depending on the patient’s needs and goals.
Double incision top surgery features horizontal incisions below and above the pectoral muscles. The inverted-T incision also requires these incisions, along with a vertical incision down from the areola to meet the bottom horizontal incision.
Another option, the periareolar method, involves two concentric circles around each areola. The keyhole method features a semicircle at the base of the areola.
Liposuction will be used for suctioning excess fat. The areola and nipple may be shifted and resized, or they may be removed and resized before placing them back at a natural position. Excess skin will be removed.
Finally, the incisions will be closed with sutures. The breast area will be bandaged, and small drains may be placed to remove fluids.
The Recovery Period
The patient will be driven home by a friend or a relative. It will be important to arrange for someone to take help the patient take care of daily needs during the start of the recovery period.
Pain, swelling, bruising, and discomfort will be experienced during recovery. Dr. Won will give prescription medications and recovery instructions to the patient. A post-surgical elastic garment must also be worn.
Time off from work will be needed, and strenuous physical activities will not be allowed until 6 to 8 weeks have passed. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled so Dr. Won can assess the recovery of the patient and remove sutures.
FTM Top Surgery Cost
The cost of FTM top surgery will depend on the details of the surgical plan. Anesthesia fees and the different techniques used during the surgery can impact the overall price of the procedure. FTM top surgery is often covered by health insurance providers.
